Diagnostics — Structural Diagnostic Engine

X-ray vision into the machine.

How MARS uses this

Every governing metric is tracked as a rolling series with stability bands and a z-score against its own history. Readings inside the band are treated as variance and left alone; sustained drift toward the outer bands raises a structural flag that outranks the P&L column.

How it benefits you

You stop repairing noise and stop ignoring decay. A losing week inside the band changes nothing - which protects working rules from panic edits - while genuine deterioration is caught as a line on a chart weeks before it becomes a hole in the account.

+2σ+1σ-1σ-2σNORMAL VARIANCESTRUCTURAL DRIFTz = −1.9 · FLAG

A rolling metric leaving its normal band: inside ±1σ is weather; a sustained walk toward −2σ is climate - and climate gets flagged.

The key idea

Middle authority

Above raw calculation. Below hard governance.

The SDE receives already-computed truth from the Journal, Weekly Summary, EV Scorecard, and Compliance Panel, then converts it into structural intelligence. Its correct role is middle authority: it explains structural condition and pushes the operator toward the correct review posture. It is a context layer — not a signal generator, not a risk-allocation engine, and never a reason to ignore Gate/Brake authority.

  • If the SDE says conditions are constructive but the Gate Map says Floor or below, the gate wins. Diagnostics cannot override capital protection.
  • Interpretation engine: rolling windows, stability, drift, and z-scores across six structural tables.
  • The Interpretation Cockpit translates live or selected-entity metrics into matrix states, category outputs, and a final narrative readout.

The entity universe

Seven entities: four primitive, three composite.

Normal, Trend Partial, Trend No-Partial, and Overflow are the primitive branches — localized strengths and weaknesses. The composite entities show how the blended system behaves. Branch-level diagnosis identifies where the problem lives; composite diagnosis decides whether the machine as a whole is improving, weakening, stabilizing, or contradicting itself.

The metric interrogation

03

Every governing number faces the same four questions.

For each metric — EV, drawdown, RAER, RAPF, acceleration — the engine asks: what is the rolling value, how stable is it, which direction is it drifting, and how many standard deviations is today from its own history? Four answers per metric, refreshed on review cadence, produce a structural readout that no single P&L figure can fake and no single bad week can panic.

Interpretation discipline

The engine diagnoses. It does not grant permission.

SDE output is deliberately advisory: it tells the operator where the structure is weakening and how confidently, but it never overrides gate authority or issues deployment numbers. That separation keeps the diagnostic honest — an engine that both diagnoses and permits would eventually be argued with. Structural truth flows upward as information; capital authority stays with the ladder.

Use cases

Where it earns its place

  • Detecting expectancy decay while the P&L still looks fine
  • Catching drawdown expansion beneath a profitable surface
  • Deciding whether a losing stretch is variance or structural deterioration
  • Setting review posture: continue, watch, repair, or compress

Edge cases & failure modes

Where it can mislead

  • !Treated as an allocation engine, it invites over-trust of intermediate diagnostics.
  • !Treated as a passive report, its value is wasted — it exists to change review posture.
  • !SDE optimism never unlocks capital during defensive gates.

Worked example

Six structural inputs are scored monthly into a composite, and the composite maps onto the regime ladder. MARS reads results in context: the same numbers mean different things earned in Expansion tailwind versus survived through Instability, and posture is adjusted to the regime rather than to the last trade.

Twelve months classified across the regime ladder - the system's own weather record, from Expansion down toward Drawdown Control.
