Operator brief · 406

Bull and bear are scored in parallel, every bar, and that is where the veto comes from.

The key idea

The construction

Every component is evaluated twice, from opposite premises.

Each filter is asked two separate questions on every bar: does this support a bullish continuation, and does this support a bearish one. The answers accumulate into two independent totals. The results are not complements — a component can fail both tests at once, which happens constantly, because most of the conditions require a definite state and the market spends much of its time without one. Two scores of two, with the remaining points simply absent, is an ordinary and highly informative reading that no single score could represent.

Schematic. Both lines suppressed and close together is the contention zone. Separation with one line clearing the A-grade threshold is the state the stack is looking for.

What one score would lose

A net figure cannot distinguish an empty market from a divided one.

Collapse the two totals into a single signed number and two entirely different situations map to the same value. A quiet market with almost nothing passing on either side nets to near zero. A violently contested market with strong readings on both sides also nets to near zero. The first is a reason to wait; the second is a reason to stay out, and they call for different amounts of attention over the following hour. Keeping both lines preserves the distinction on the screen, where an operator can see it without doing arithmetic.

The veto, stated mechanically

Neither line clearing separation is the refusal, and no extra rule is needed.

The veto is not a separate condition bolted on top of the score. It is what the two-line construction produces on its own: when the components are split, neither total can reach the high band, because points are being spent on both sides. The refusal is structural rather than discretionary, which is what makes it hold under pressure. There is no threshold an operator can quietly relax to make a contested market read as clean, because the contention is expressed as two numbers rather than one, and lowering a bar does not merge them.

The state that needs naming

Both lines around the middle is the specific configuration to stand down on.

The reading to recognise is both scores hovering together in the middle of the range. It is not weakness — weakness looks like both lines low. It is genuine, active disagreement between components that each have something to say. This is the environment where continuation strategies perform worst, and it is also the environment where a chart most tempts an operator into finding a story, because there is plenty happening. The instrument's contribution here is a number that stays stubbornly unimpressive while the screen looks eventful.

  • Both low means quiet. Both middling means contested. They are not the same wait.
  • Separation matters as much as level — a five against a four is not a five against a one.
  • The contested state resolves on its own; the discipline is not to pre-empt the resolution.

What it feeds

The score at entry becomes the field that later grades this decision.

Because both totals exist as values rather than as an impression, the state at entry can be captured and carried into the record with the trade. That is what eventually allows the question to be asked properly: did trades taken at a high separated score actually outperform trades taken from a contested book, in this operator's own evidence. Without recorded scores the question can only be answered by memory, and memory reliably reports that the losing trades looked worse at the time than they did. The two-line design makes the veto auditable, not just enforceable.

The key idea

Build the instrument so the state you most want to ignore has its own reading.

Every trader knows the contested market is where the damage happens, and every trader trades it anyway, because contention is not a feeling that arrives clearly labelled. The design response is not more willpower — it is an instrument that gives that specific state its own visible signature, distinct from both strength and quiet. Two lines instead of one costs nothing and makes the worst environment legible at a glance. That is most of what an honest indicator can do.
