Disagreeing with the classifier is allowed. There is a correct way to do it.

A classification cannot be evaluated by someone who cannot read its inputs.

The workbook carries an advanced monthly metrics interpretation tab whose only job is to explain what the raw monthly metrics mean — average gate rank, the compression score, gate pressure, structural health, the volatility index, persistence. Its stated use is to understand raw monthly metric meaning before trusting a regime classification, and the ordering in that sentence is the instruction. Input literacy comes before output trust. An operator who does not know that structural health measures how well the system handled the month rather than how easy the month was will read a high health score during a painful stretch as evidence the engine is broken, when it is the engine making precisely the distinction it exists to make. Most disagreements with a classifier dissolve at this step, and the ones that survive it are worth taking seriously.

The loop terminates in one of two places: the disagreement dissolves because a metric meant something other than assumed, or it survives and becomes a specific, documented calibration question. Neither outcome is discounting the label on feel.

The engine checks itself

The score engine carries a quality flag, and it is the first thing to read.

The core calculation tab does more than compute — it pulls the raw values, normalises each metric, sums the composite, assigns the primary driver, maps the regime, selects the sub-label, builds the final label, and performs its own quality checks. That last step means the engine has an opinion about whether this month's classification is sound, and the flag surfaces on the output alongside the label itself. A month whose flag is clean and whose label surprises the operator is a different situation from a month whose flag is raised: the first is a genuine disagreement between a person and a working instrument, the second is the instrument reporting that something about its own inputs did not check out. Reading the flag before the label is the cheapest step in the audit and the one most often skipped, because the label is larger and more interesting.

The driver

The primary driver names which metric is doing the work.

A composite score is a sum, and a sum conceals which term dominated it. The score engine assigns a primary driver for exactly this reason, and it converts a disagreement from a vague objection into a testable one. If the month felt heavier than a balanced label suggests, the driver tells the operator whether the composite was held up by persistence and structural health while pressure scored poorly — in which case the engine is saying the month was hard but well-handled, which may be true and may be the more useful reading. If instead the driver is the metric whose direction is unsettled, the disagreement has landed on a known open question rather than on the engine's judgement. Either way the objection now has a subject, and an objection with a subject can be resolved.

The trap

The label describes the system's condition, not the operator's experience of it.

The most common source of felt disagreement is a category error rather than a calibration fault. The engine explicitly classifies the internal state of the system from gate and brake telemetry — it is not a market-regime detector and it is not a measure of how the month felt to trade. A month can be genuinely unpleasant, full of losing stretches and uncomfortable decisions, while the gate held its state, transitions stayed rare, and the structure absorbed the load exactly as designed. That is a balanced month by the only definition the engine uses, and the discomfort is real and is a different quantity. Recognising this does not make the discomfort irrelevant — it belongs in the weekly notes and in the operability readings elsewhere in the panel. It means the classifier is not the instrument that measures it.

When the objection survives

A surviving disagreement is a calibration question, and it goes in writing.

Occasionally an operator works through the raw metrics, finds the flag clean, locates the driver, rules out the category error, and still holds that the label is wrong. That is a valuable outcome and it has a destination: it is a claim that one threshold band is mis-set, and it belongs on the calibration tab as a documented proposal rather than as a reason to disregard the month's classification. The engine's own doctrine constrains what happens next — thresholds are adjusted cautiously and every change is documented, because an edit reclassifies history. So the disagreement is recorded, watched across further months to see whether it recurs in the same direction, and acted on only if it does. One month's objection is an observation. Three months' objections pointing at the same band is evidence.

The key idea

The point of an auditable classifier is that you are permitted to be right.

An instrument that cannot be checked leaves an operator with two bad options: accept every reading, or discount readings by feel and lose the benefit of having the instrument. Building the classification as a traceable funnel with a self-check, a named driver and a documented calibration surface creates a third option, which is to disagree with evidence. That is worth more than the labels themselves. A system whose diagnostics can be argued with in a structured way is one whose diagnostics get better over time, because the arguments accumulate somewhere instead of dissolving into scepticism.
