The structure of the problem
The comparison case was never collected, and it cannot be recovered.
A claim of the form successful practitioners do this is only informative if unsuccessful practitioners do it less. That comparison requires the second group, and the second group does not get interviewed — they leave the industry, and their practices leave with them. What remains is a set of accounts from one tail of a distribution, presented as though it described the mechanism that produced the tail. The reasoning error is ordinary and it is not avoidable by being careful when reading. It is built into which accounts exist.
Schematic of an inferential gap, not of any dataset. A practice can be near-universal among survivors and equally universal among everyone else, in which case it explains nothing.
