Static versus VIE: two coefficients, one decision, no reflexive winner.

What each coefficient knows that the other doesn't.

The static coefficient comes from the symbol's structural profile — the Instrument Master's classification of what this asset typically is: its baseline volatility bucket, its character, its spread behavior. It's slow, stable knowledge, immune to one strange session. The VIE coefficient comes from right now: the entered ATR, band width, slope, persistence, confirmation, news and spread state, run through the tier ladder. It's fast, current knowledge, exposed to every quirk of the moment. Neither dominates in principle. The static view can be stale when a symbol's regime genuinely shifts; the live view can be noise when one session's readings mislead. Producing both, side by side, is the panel refusing to pretend the tension away.

The conflict doctrine

Sharp disagreement means investigate — not widen.

The manual's troubleshooting entry for a sharp static-versus-VIE conflict prescribes the Comparison Panel and adds the sentence that carries the doctrine: do not blindly choose the wider coefficient. The instinct it targets feels like prudence — when in doubt, more room — and is actually a cost decision made without analysis. A wider trail isn't free: it converts directly into giveback on every retracement the extra width tolerates, and on a trend runner that's the difference between harvesting the move and donating a chunk of it back. Reflexive widening also destroys the comparison's diagnostic value: a conflict is the panel telling you either the structural profile or the live read is wrong about today, and which one matters — a stale profile is a maintenance finding, a distorted live read is a today-only caution. Splitting the difference learns nothing.

Resolving it

Interrogate the inputs, weigh the sample, decide, and log which source won.

The resolution path runs through questions the cockpit already surfaces. Is the live read trustworthy — are the VIE inputs clean, is a news window or spread spike distorting them, does the confirmation state support the tier? Is the structural read current — when was this symbol's classification last validated, and does the audit log show live readings drifting from it for weeks? Is the sample behind either view thin? Then the decision: static, VIE, or a documented override — and the Audit Log records the final coefficient used alongside its source, which is what turns each conflict into calibration evidence. A symbol whose conflicts persistently resolve toward the live read is a symbol whose static profile has drifted; the maintenance rule — update the Instrument Master first, validate before live use — picks it up from there.

  • News and spread inputs exist partly to flag when the live read shouldn't be trusted at face value.
  • One conflicted session is a decision; a month of same-direction conflicts is an Instrument Master finding.
  • Overrides are legal and logged — the standing pattern: the exception exists, and it announces itself.

Why keep both permanently

The comparison is a drift detector wearing a decision aid's clothes.

The deeper reason the panel never collapses to one number: the static-versus-VIE gap, tracked over time, is a continuous audit of whether the system's structural knowledge still matches the market it trades. Symbols change character — a quiet pair becomes a news-driven one, a wild index calms down — and no scheduled review catches it as fast as a decision surface that forces the comparison every single trail trade. The Comparison Panel is thus doing double duty: settling today's coefficient, and accumulating the evidence trail that keeps the whole classification layer honest. Single-answer systems can't do the second job, because they've already thrown the disagreement away.

Structure and moment each know something real, and the panel's refusal to auto-merge them is the whole design: agreement flows through frictionlessly, conflict gets staged for an accountable human decision, and every resolution feeds the log that eventually recalibrates the structure itself. It's the discretionary-quant bargain applied to volatility — the model computes both cases, the operator judges, and the judging is measured. Wider when the evidence says wider. Tighter when it says tighter. Never wider just because doubt feels expensive.
